Chapter Twenty-Three

The snow, now nearly a foot deep, worked its way through the top cracks of his impractical sneakers he’d worn because his lust-driven prefrontal cortex refused to make sensible decisions. Water soaked through his thin socks to his feet within a matter of minutes. Large flakes fluttered across the sky, cutting diagonally right in his face. No matter how he turned and twisted his body, the wind seemed to shift with him. Although the temperature wasn’t as frigid as it had been previously, Grant seriously considered ripping up another outfit to transform to wolf. He had promised to show his butt again.

Traces of moonlight reflected off the glittering snow, illuminating the dark shadows of the trees towering above him. Structures, the various toolsheds and gardening stations, stood out in contrast, and Grant checked each one he came across, hoping to eventually hit pay dirt before he froze to death in his absurd quest.

Occasionally, whiffs of sunblock and cheap cologne traveled in his direction. Before Grant traced the scent’s path, the wind tore it away, dispersing the trail of it through the air. Grant mentally shrugged. Let the mischief-maker confront him here. At least that would mask Grant’s insanity in a convenient lie and he could tell anyone who asked that he’d come out here to find his tormentor rather than to chase after a bunny.

By now, he inwardly admitted he had no intention of eating Lucky. Rather, he thought he might find Lee and their two hearts, cornered by the storm, would find themselves needing the same thing.

“You’re a total idiot,” Grant said. But he kept walking forward.

Up ahead, unnatural light flickered through the air, dense with snowfall. Grant wrapped his arms around himself and plowed through the snow, leaving behind a long trail of sloppy footprints, until he reached the outside of a shed. The structure rattled each time the wind blew through the cracks in the wooden boards, where the light peeped through.

“Hello?” Grant said. He didn’t want to accidently walk in on a couple in the middle of a sexual encounter. He didn’t detect any of the telltale signs of hanky panky, but it was hard to smell anything with his nose half frozen, and they could be quiet lovers. “Hello? Anyone in there?”

When no one answered, Grant grabbed hold of the rope connected to a metal peg and pulled. The door slid open. Behind it, the rabbit that started it all scratched his long ear with his elongated back leg. Lee had dressed him in some type of sweater he must have made himself. At least, Grant hadn’t seen any gift shops with cute animal costumes in the hotel.

When Lucky saw Grant, he spit out a string of poop.

“Sorry, Lucky,” Grant said. “Didn’t mean to scare you.”

Apparently, Lucky wasn’t quite buying it. His paws skidded on the wooden floor; his claws left behind tiny scratches, lighter on the dark and aging wood. In his rush to flee, he turned and bopped his head straight into a wall.
